How do you grow a more caring a peaceful society? You create better citizens. Citizens who recognize the needs of others as equal to their own. It’s simple really. Simple enough for the youngest children to learn. Basic enough for a baby to teach. Roots of Empathy.
That’s Roots of Empathy (ROE) is an award winning, evidence based program that has shown dramatic effect in reducing levels of aggression and violence among school children, while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy.
At the heart of the program are a neighborhood infant and parent who visit the classroom nine times throughout the year. This is called a family visit.
A trained Roots of Emapathy instructor coaches students to observe the babies development and to label baby’s feelings. This experiential learning helps children to further identify their own feelings and the feelings of others. This is called “Emotional Literacy”. Students become more competent in this area thus developing “Empathy”.
Roots of Empathy educates both the mind and the heart.
Currently in Camrose and the surrounding area there are 2 programs running out of 2 schools. Though it varies from school to school, Roots of Empathy is taught in Kindergarten through grade seven. Programs begin in October with infants being between the ages of 2 – 4 months.
